When talking about Jews with a non-Jew, whether it is a believer or not, everything is fine until the concept of a Chosen People emerges. We can observe that the spirit of equality between men that is so characteristic of modern times, simply explodes and opposes anyone who claims to belong to a People that had been chosen by a higher authority. They immediately associate the term of chosen with superiority. The spirit of egalitarianism, or rather standardization – a demonic mechanism also called globalization whose aim is to abolish the boundaries between peoples and ethnicities – rises with fury trying to destroy a reality commended by the Lord. The most interesting thing about this is that the more the person in question considers himself to be the enemy of globalization, the more virulent the opposition to the concept of the chosen people is.
The well-known accusations can be heard each time: “how can any people dare to declare itself to be chosen among the others”, or “you claim to be the chosen people, we too – the Hungarian nationalists for example have a conscience of being the chosen people among the nations – “so why should your election be more legitimate than ours, and how can you prove that you are right?” … and then “we are all equal before Elohim and he loves us all the same way “, etc.
In recent days, I have been asked questions about the Jewish people twice. Its status as a chosen people had been categorically rejected each time. The first person was a non-belierver who does although have a form of faith in a unique deity, the other was the member of a Christian church having faith in Christ, but visibly rejecting the foundation of the Word and the Will of the Lord by refusing to acknowledge the basic role that the Jewish people have been given. In the latter case, I had to realize that many people who define themselves as believers do not have any respect and faith in the Word of the Lord. They consciously rebel against his will and his revelations. Paradoxically, this man belonged to a church where the Old Testament is taken more seriously than in Christian churches in general.
In Hebrew, the word election has a very different meaning than in other languages. The European spirit based on feudalism and Hellenism defines election as a privilege and is synonymous with laziness, exploitation, tyranny and rule over subjugated people. It is very important to remember that the Lord did not endow the original hebrew words with the content that the vulgate and other translations later gave to it.
The Eternal has chosen the Jewish people to minister and to serve His cause. The ministry that was assigned to the Jews is the same as the one for which he called the Gentiles since the coming of Christ on earth. This election is about bringing the Word of יהוה and the Gospel to all who do not know it yet. The Lord chose Israel to represent and teach His Laws to the nations. Election is not a privilege given to some in order to rule over the others, but on the contrary implies a quasi- parental, or rather fraternal responsibility towards those who have no knowledge about the Creator of this world. It is therefore not a privilege, but a heavy and difficult responsibility.
Just as an elder brother cares for the youngest and acts as the right hand of the parents, our duty is to feed our brothers and sisters with this spiritual food that does not come from us, but which has been given by our Father to all. The eldest is a model for the following ones. He shows how to behave with their parents, he takes an active part in teaching and taking care of the family alongside with his parents. This is the original meaning of the Hebrew word “chosen”. The Jewish people is the elder brother who had been first informed of the Heavenly Father’s will. We are the helpers of our Father of all.
The most perfect example of what the real meaning of the word Chosen is, is when the Chosen amongst the Chosen, Yeshua himself, gives us the example of what our role is as the chosen ones, whether we are Jews or born again in Christ: when our Master knelt down before his disciples and began to wash their feet. This is the essence of the word chosen as well as the essence of the Jewish identity: a kind of caregiver. Although Peter was a Jew, he had trouble understanding Yeshua’s strange behavior. Likewise, those who accuse Jews of communitarianism and arrogance when we dare refer to our chosen status.
Yeshua was also a chosen one. The chosen one amongst the chosen people. He was rejected by the Pharisaic rulers who controlled the people’s mind at the time. The priests of his days, like today’s antisemites, refused to accept this heavenly legitimate election in order to protect their false one.
Perhaps the best way to make these people feel what our choosiness is about would rather come from a well-known movie than from the Bible: “I know we are the chosen people. But once in a while can’t you chose someone else? ” (from the movie: “The fiddler on the roof.” This replica comes up, when the chief police officer announces to the protagonist the arrival of a pogrom in their village.
Indeed, the Jewish people withdrew into itself with time. Announcing the Word of the Lord to other peoples as we swore to do it on mount Sinai, had not always been welcomed. Hatred, excommunication, pogroms and other kind of persecutions were the only fruit we got from it. What may appear to be pride and segregation from our part is just a reflex of self-defense in order to prevent us from further hostile reactions from the peoples among which we are scattered, for the seal of יהוה is on our foreheads.
The one who is not Jewish, but still wants to be part of the Chosen People, has the opportunity to do so. But you should no more become a Jew for that. This is precisely what the Lord wants, that all of us shall become his chosen ones, but for the non-jews this happens exclusively through the Covenant with Christ. However, it must be known that for becoming a chosen one, we also have to accept the entire revealed Word of the Lord including the initial election of the people of Israel. The Alliance with Christ is only possible if these conditions are fulfilled. The Gentiles’ “choosiness” – albeit a little different from ours – implies the basic ministry of welcoming the new-coming members and serve them as Yeshua served his own followers.
